Ministerial Meeting on the Heavy Rains that began on July 1
July 3, 2021
[Provisional Translation]
On July 3, 2021, the Prime Minister held a ministerial meeting on the heavy rains that began on July 1 at the Prime Minister’s Office.
Following the discussion, the Prime Minister said,
“Due to the heavy rains that began on July 1 resulting from the strong seasonal rain front, multiple landslides have occurred, and in particular in the vicinity of the Izusan district of the city of Atami in Shizuoka Prefecture, multiple people and a large number of houses have become engulfed in the mudflows, among other damages. I express my heartfelt sympathy to all those who have been affected by the disaster.
Police, firefighters, and members of the Japan Coast Guard and Self-Defense Forces are currently going all out to conduct rescue and relief activities, including rescuing survivors in need of help, provide guidance to evacuees, and carry out other critical actions.
I ask each minister to work together with local governments to make utmost efforts to assess the damage and respond to the emergency, putting people’s lives above all else.
We must maintain the highest level of vigilance as the seasonal rain front may cause heavy rains in the time to come. I request that every possible measure be taken in a flexible manner, while being careful of secondary disasters, as well as swift assistance to shelters and other places.
I urge everyone living in the affected areas or those subject to heavy rain warnings to continue paying close attention to evacuation advisories from local governments and take early actions that will protect their own lives.”
