[Provisional Translation]

On June 30, 2021, the Prime Minister held a ministerial meeting on traffic safety measures at the Prime Minister’s Office.

At the meeting, the participants engaged in discussions on important challenges in traffic safety measures based on a traffic accident that occurred on June 28.

Following the discussion, the Prime Minister said,

“Recently a truck crashed into a line of elementary school students on their way home from school, causing an extremely tragic accident in which five children suffered injuries or died. I express my deep condolences for the children who lost their lives and extend my heartfelt sympathies to those who were injured and their families.

There has been no end to harrowing accidents like this. We will immediately launch a necessary investigation and explore the cause of the accident to ensure relevant operators conduct thorough safety management.

We have been informed that the truck driver is alleged to have committed drunk-driving. Needless to say, drunk-driving is an extremely malicious and dangerous act that would directly lead to a serious accident, and we will be thoroughgoing in eliminating such behavior.

In response to the recent traffic accident, we will swiftly validate the urgent measures compiled thus far for the safety of children and elderly drivers, and we will once again perform comprehensive inspections of roads in school zones, expand and strengthen our urgent measures, and quickly transition such improvements into implementation so that this kind of heartbreaking and tragic accident never happens again.

I ask the relevant ministers to swiftly identify necessary steps in order to implement thorough measures to protect the safety of children.”
