[Provisional Translation]

On June 22, 2021, the Prime Minister held the tenth meeting of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Promotion Headquarters at the Prime Minister’s Office.

At the meeting, the participants engaged in discussions on the Voluntary National Review (VNR) on SDGs.

Following the discussion, the Prime Minister said,

“The spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has posed a threat to human security, threatening the lives, livelihoods, dignity, and other matters of people around the world. In order to achieve SDGs in the post-COVID-19 era, the world must work as one to tackle the issue, put together strategies without being constrained by past practices, and accelerate relevant initiatives.

Furthermore, it is important to utilize groundbreaking innovation in every field, fully mobilize all possible policy tools, and embark on social reforms ahead of the times.

Under the concept of leaving no one’s health behind, the Government will continue to promote universal health coverage and work toward the realization of a green society and digital transformation.

Climate change in particular is an imminent challenge which the whole of humankind should aim to solve. Hence, we will implement measures with the aim of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, based on the idea that responses to climate change will be a driving force for boosting the robust, long-term growth of the Japanese and global economies.

Based on the visions, initiatives, and challenges compiled in the Voluntary National Review, I ask the relevant ministers to deepen cooperation with all stakeholders and further speed up efforts to realize a society where no one is left behind.”
