Instructions from the Prime Minister regarding a patient with possible infection of Ebola virus disease

August 3, 2019

[Provisional Translation]

These three instructions were made on August 3, 23:57, upon the discovery of a patient with possible infection of Ebola virus disease in Saitama Prefecture.

1. Make utmost effort in treating the patient and take sufficient precaution against secondary infection.

2. Continue to closely coordinate among relevant Ministries and Agencies to take full measures from steadily implementation of  quarantine, examination, treatment, to  prevention of further infection.

3. Provide speedy and adequate information to the public, and ensure the safety of the people.

At this point, the infection of Ebola virus disease is not confirmed, and the results of the test may turn out to be negative.

It is said that the disease is contagious only when the symptom becomes evident. It is therefore highly unlikely that the passengers who were on board the same airplane with the patient to face the risk of infection.

Also, Ebola virus disease does not infect from a patient without any symptoms, and is not an airborne infection.

(Updated on August 4, 17:08)
The National Institute of Infectious Disease (NIID) conducted PCR test and concluded at 3 pm the person to be negative for Ebola virus disease. The patient will stay at the hospital and be monitored.
