On July 17, 2020, the Prime Minister jointly held the 11th meeting of the Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy in 2020 and the 41st meeting of the Council on Investments for the Future, at the Prime Minister’s Office.

At the meeting, the participants held discussions on the draft Basic Policy on Economic and Fiscal Management and Reform 2020 and the draft action plan of the Growth Strategy.

Following the discussions, the Prime Minister said,

“Today, the Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy and the Council on Investments for the Future finalized the Basic Policy 2020 and the action plan of the Growth Strategy respectively.

The Basic Policy this year is future-oriented, reflecting our strong determination that Japan will pave its way to the future by implementing bold societal transformation amidst the world facing the novel coronavirus pandemic, a truly historic crisis. We have made the subtitle ‘overcoming crisis towards a new future.’ We will work together with the people and overcome this crisis, looking ahead to the future and advancing towards it. To this end, we will steadily implement this Basic Policy.

This year’s Growth Strategy has been formulated with a focus on the establishment of new work styles, the reassessment of the payment settlement infrastructure, responses to the digitization of the marketplace, and the advancement of open innovation, among others, as the pillars. From the latter half of this month, we will start new discussions to plan a new vision for society or the nation in the age of COVID-19, and the future beyond that. We will seek a vision of our society from a long-term view, which is agile in the face of change, resilient and sustainable, while promoting regional revitalization and advancing digitization.

Lastly, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the discussions and cooperation from each member of the two councils to date. Thank you.”
