On July 9, 2020, the Prime Minister spoke to the press at the Prime Minister’s Office.

Regarding the number of infections in Tokyo and the government’s future responses, the Prime Minister said,

“Firstly, regarding the current situation, we understand that the number of patients with severe symptoms is much lower compared to April, and the majority of new cases of infection is in people in their 20s and 30s; and that medical structures are not becoming stretched. At the same time, we are monitoring the situation with high vigilance. Group infections have been confirmed at places where people dine together and other such settings. I ask the public, including young people, to take thorough measures to prevent the spread of infections, including avoiding the three Cs (closed spaces, crowded places, and close-contact settings). The government will also further strengthen its counter-cluster measures, such as enhancing screening structures and reinforcing the structures of public health centers, collaborating closely with local governments. After this, Minister Nishimura will meet with Ms. KOIKE Yuriko, Governor of Tokyo. I would like them to consider specific responses to be made. Based on that, the government will firmly and swiftly respond and implement relevant measures.”
