On March 12, 2020, the Prime Minister held the second meeting of the Japan Exposition Comprehensive Promotion Council at the Prime Minister’s Office.

During the meeting, an exchange of views took place on the Japan Exposition.

Based on the exchange of views, the Prime Minister said,

“The concept of the Japan Exposition was developed from the ‘Beauty of Japan’ Comprehensive Project Advisory Panel, chaired by the late Mr. TSUGAWA Masahiko. We have materialized this as a project to take the opportunity of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games this year to promote Japan’s culture and beauty to every corner of the world to nurture deeper understanding.

As reported by Commissioner Miyata, since the formation of this promotion council, a wide range of exhibitions and events have been held, communicating the appeal of Japan with many people both in Japan and overseas.

Unfortunately, the Japan Exposition Opening Ceremony, scheduled for this week, has been cancelled to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

At this moment, we are exerting every effort to prevent the spread of infections. Once containment comes into view, we intend to promote the Japan Exposition even more strongly, to appeal the wonders of Japan to the international community.

To that end, based on the valuable comments provided by the council members here today, I ask the Agency for Cultural Affairs, working with the relevant ministries, to further proceed with efforts to enrich the contents of the Japan Exposition as an initiative to present the beauty of Japan, starting from the Jomon period and continuing to today, in a streamlined manner in each area.”
