On February 18, 2020, the Prime Minister received a courtesy call from a delegation of the U.S. Congressional Study Group on Japan, at the Prime Minister’s Office.

The Prime Minister said in his address,

“I welcome that the Japan study group from the U.S. Congress is visiting Japan once again this year.

I would like to express my appreciation to Congresswoman Diana DeGette, Co-Chair of the Study Group, who leads the delegation each year. This is the seventh time for you to lead this delegation and I am pleased that I have been able to welcome you as Prime Minister on each of those occasions. As some of you might be visiting Japan for the first time, I hope you will certainly enjoy the beauty and other charms of Japan.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Japan-U.S. Security Treaty. Despite facing extremely intense opposition campaigns 60 years ago, our predecessors acted with great honor and a strong sense of responsibility, which has led to the Japan-U.S. Alliance we have today. I believe that the Japan-U.S. Alliance now plays a significant role in the world as an alliance of hope.

Mutual exchanges between parliamentarians of the two countries like this are, I believe, a great pillar that support our alliance. I would like to express my appreciation for your great works. I also would like to ask for your further bipartisan support for our alliance moving forward.”
