Visit to Miyagi Prefecture
November 24, 2019
[Provisional Translation]
On November 24, 2019, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited Miyagi Prefecture.
The Prime Minister first attended the 16th Recovery Gourmet Grand Prix held at Shizugawa Temporary Fish Market in Minamisanriku Town in Motoyoshi District. After that, he visited the Ruins of the Great East Japan Earthquake Kesennuma City Memorial Museum, and held a talk and other events with students of Hashikami Junior High School.
In the afternoon, the Prime Minister visited a shipyard in Kesennuma City, followed by a visit to the flood response base at Yoshida River in Osaki City.
After the visits, the Prime Minister said,
“Today, I visited Minamisanriku Town and Kesennuma City. People there are exerting every effort and looking ahead to the future, including the members of the shopping arcade, who invigorate the local economy with local gourmet specialties, junior high school students who pass on stories about the earthquake to raise disaster awareness, and the members of the shipyards, who work as one towards the full-scale recovery of the local industry.
Even after the recovery and revitalization period comes to an end, we will continue to strongly and firmly support these positive efforts. We have a political responsibility to complete reconstruction. We will accelerate efforts to compile a basic policy within the year, while paying attention to the voices of the local communities. In the Yoshidagawa district, which sustained great damage in Typhoon No. 19*, while I have just received a briefing earlier, steady progress is being made towards the recovery of infrastructure as a result of the vigorous efforts of all the people involved.
In order to rebuild lives and ‘nariwai’ (occupations and livelihoods that sustain people’s daily lives) at the earliest possible day, we aim to implement the policy package swiftly and with great care, and at the same time, provide seamless support through the supplementary budget. Furthermore, based on the verification of various issues related to disasters so far, we intend to further power up disaster prevention, disaster mitigation, and building national resilience, in order to secure safety and peace of mind for the people.”
