[Provisional Translation]

On November 20, 2019, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe attended a meeting to exchange views with the public on the social security reform to one that is oriented to all generations, held at the Prime Minister’s Office.

The Prime Minister said in his opening address,

“Thank you all for coming to the Prime Minister’s Office today despite your busy schedules.

As Minister Nishimura introduced in the beginning, the Government is advancing deliberations over the social security reform, which encompasses pensions, healthcare, nursing care, and also work style.

To date, the focus of the social security reform has covered pensions, healthcare, and nursing care. This time, we will carry out one that also covers work style. That is to say, in the 100-year life society, I believe there will be various stages in our work style: what kind of work styles will we adopt when we become ill or require nursing care? What kind of work styles will we adopt at different life stages, such as marriage and childbirth? These arguments also have implications for pensions. With this is mind, we will now advance reforms that cover pensions, healthcare, nursing care, and work style. We aim to advance bold reforms that will transform our social security system to one which supports not only the elderly, but also the childrearing generation, those who semi-retire, and those who will bear the future, in the era of the 100-year life society. In other words, one which is oriented to all generations.

Against this backdrop, we have invited a group of participants with diverse backgrounds. I fully understand that it might be tough to speak up in this kind of setting and that it is quite a rare experience. I wish you to focus on sharing your candid views with us, forgetting this surrounding.”
