July 1, 2019
[Provisional Translation]
On July 1, 2019, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held the Presentation Ceremony for Certificates of the FY2019 “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Future Cities” at the Prime Minister's Office.
The Prime Minister said in his opening address,
“I thank each of the representatives of the local governments across Japan that were selected for the SDGs Future Cities for coming to the Prime Minister’s Office today.
Towards a society where no one is left behind, which the SDGs aspire for, we recently compiled the Expanded SDGs Action Plan 2019 to demonstrate to the international community Japan’s efforts as a reliable player to achieve that.
Regional revitalization is one of the three major pillars of this Action Plan.
Activities that the local governments across Japan implement to achieve the SDGs, while creating partnerships with local companies and civil society, are the key to regional revitalization.
The local governments selected as the SDGs Future Cities this time are highly appraised for their respective efforts to promote sustainable urban development, which reflect their unique challenges and characteristics. I hope that these successful cases are widely shared both domestically and internationally and become a powerful driving force to achieve the SDGs.
Based on the outcomes of the recent G20 Osaka Summit, the Government will proactively promote to the international community Japan’s own SDGs model as an innovative endeavor at the latest UN High Level Forum and the SDG Summit.
Last but not least, I would like to close my congratulatory message by expressing my heartfelt respect for all your immensely creative efforts and hope that your success will inspire the efforts to promote the SDGs by other local governments across Japan. Once again, congratulations to all of you today.”
