On June 12, 2019, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a press conference at Tokyo International Airport (Haneda Airport).
 
Regarding his visit to Iran, the Prime Minister said,
 
“There are concerns on the rising tensions in the Middle East. As the international community increasingly focuses its attention on the region, Japan intends to fulfill its role as far as possible in order to bring about peace and stability in the region. Based on the traditional friendly relations between Japan and Iran, I hope to engage in a frank exchange of views with President Rouhani and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei with a view to easing these tensions.”
