Liaison Meeting of the Government and Ruling Parties
June 3, 2019
[Provisional Translation]
On June 3, 2019, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe attended the Liaison Meeting of the Government and Ruling Parties at the Prime Minister’s Office.
The Prime Minister said in his opening address,
“The mass stabbing that took place in Kawasaki on the 28th last week was extremely harrowing, and I express my sincere condolences for those who lost their lives and wish for the early recovery of those injured. We must ensure the safety of our children no matter what it takes, by implementing measures urgently so as not to repeat such an incident. On the 29th last week, a ministerial council was convened, and I instructed the council to: elucidate all the facts related to the incident through a thorough investigation and ensure information sharing among the relevant ministries and agencies; thoroughly secure safety along the routes used for commuting; and ensure information sharing related to suspicious individuals and prompt responses to them. The Government will work as one to implement these measures with a sense of urgency.
Just around three weeks remain until the end of the ordinary session of the Diet. With regard to the bill to prevent child abuse, the ruling parties and the opposition parties agreed on the amendment to the bill and it was passed unanimously at the House of Representatives. I express my deep gratitude for the efforts of the ruling parties, and the Government intends to continue to engage sincerely in the deliberations at the House of Councillors. We also intend to advance other policies by passing as many bills as possible by the end of the Diet session. We will continue to strive to provide thorough explanations in the Diet and therefore ask for your cooperation.
We now have less than one month left until the G20 Osaka Summit of which Japan holds the presidency for the first time. Japan will welcome major leaders of the world such as President Trump, President Putin, and President Xi Jinping. Recently, there is a tendency in the international community that confrontations are emphasized too often. As the Chair of the G20 Summit, I am determined to play a role to find similarities or common ground, not the differences in views among member countries, persistently. While obtaining support from the members of the ruling parties, I intend to make this summit one that finds practical solutions to various issues, such as world trade, the digital economy, the environment, other global issues, and women’s empowerment.
We intend to accelerate our discussions on the very first Basic Policy and the Investments for the Future Strategy in the era of Reiwa to compile them this month. Thanks to the Government and the ruling parties implementing the policies as one, the GDP has reached a record high and the employment, which is most important for people’s lives, has been improved significantly. Even in the new era of Reiwa, we will further strengthen such trends and expand the virtuous cycle of growth and distribution. To that end, I intend to closely collaborate with the ruling parties and proceed with our compilation work. I ask for the cooperation of everyone here.”
