On May 17, 2019, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held the 45th meeting of the Council for the Implementation of Education Rebuilding at the Prime Minister’s Office.

At the start of the meeting, the Prime Minister received the Council’s 11th proposal from Council Chair Mr. Kaoru Kamata.

The Prime Minister said in his address,

“The Council for the Implementation of Education Rebuilding has held vigorous discussion on two themes, namely educational reform corresponding to technological development and high school reforms in response to a new era, and today compiled them as the council’s eleventh proposal. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for the efforts made by the expert members.

This proposal looks towards the advent of the Society 5.0 era and makes recommendations on the use of new technologies in education, including the utilization of distance learning for all elementary, junior high, and high schools, the installation of ICT infrastructure in schools, and the enhancement of teachers’ abilities to teach using ICT. In addition, with respect to high school reforms, the Council also proposes reforms that diversify high school education, such as the review of the general course track in high schools, the balancing of liberal arts and science courses, and the promotion of studies focusing on the issues facing local communities. This is an important proposal, which is the first of its kind in the Reiwa era regarding the rebuilding of education.

Based on the measures set out in this proposal, the Government will steadily implement the rebuilding of education such that all Japanese will be able to make their own blossoms come into full bloom and realize their hopes for tomorrow, which is our wish for the Reiwa era. I ask for the continued cooperation of all the experts here as we work toward that goal.”
