[Provisional Translation]

On January 18, 2019, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held the tenth meeting of the Headquarters for the Promotion of Privatization of the Postal Services at the Prime Minister’s Office.

During the meeting, the opinion of the Postal Privatization Committee regarding the comprehensive review of the progress of postal privatization was reported. The report on the opinion of the Postal Privatization Committee regarding the comprehensive review of the progress of postal privatization was approved.

Based on today’s report and approval, the Prime Minister said,

“Over ten years have passed since we privatized the postal services. During this period, the privatization of the postal services has made steady progress, including public listing and the sale of shares owned by the Government.

At the same time, as the socioeconomic system is undergoing dynamic revolutions, such as the arrival of Society 5.0 and a 100-year life society, how will the Japan Post Group address these changes? The true value of the Japan Post Group is being tested.

The latest opinion of the Postal Privatization Committee expresses strong hope to its building of new areas of growth, utilizing the strengths of the solid network of 24,000 post offices across Japan, which is unparalleled in the world. The Committee also proposed revising the maximum allowable deposits at Japan Post Bank. Taking into account such views, I hope that the Japan Post Group will further enhance user convenience, along with taking steps to increase its corporate value and help revitalize local regions.

The Abe Cabinet will further accelerate the progress of postal privatization by supporting the Japan Post Group’s efforts to create new value. I would like to ask the relevant ministers to continue to make steady efforts in this endeavor.”
