Policy Roundtable of the Government and Ruling Parties
October 15, 2018
[Provisional Translation]
On October 15, 2018, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe attended a Policy Roundtable of the Government and Ruling Parties at the Prime Minister’s Office.
At the meeting, a discussion was held on the supplementary budget for FY2018.
Based on the discussion, the Prime Minister said,
“Today, the FY2018 supplementary budget plan was finalized. I would like to express my gratitude for the cooperation of the ruling parties in formulating the budget in a very short period of time.
The series of natural disasters that struck Japan this summer, including the earthquake in the northern part of Osaka, the heavy rains in western Japan in July, Typhoon No. 21,* and the Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake, have caused serious damage across the Japanese archipelago. Even now, many people continue to face great difficulties in the areas affected by the disasters.
This supplementary budget is aimed at promoting our all-out efforts for the recovery and reconstruction of the areas affected by the disasters, including providing strong support for rebuilding people’s lives as quickly as possible, restoring their ‘nariwai’ (occupations and livelihoods that sustain people’s daily lives), and repairing public facilities and agricultural land, while also urgently implementing safety measures for concrete walls and installing air-conditioning units in public elementary and junior high schools, as a measure against heatstroke, for the sake of protecting our children.
We will submit this supplementary budget plan promptly at the upcoming extraordinary session of the Diet, with the aim of having it passed as soon as possible. I ask for the continued cooperation of the members of the ruling parties so that the Government and ruling parties will continue to work in unity to further accelerate the recovery and reconstruction processes.”
