The Council for the Implementation of Education Rebuilding
August 3, 2018
[Provisional Translation]
On August 3, 2018, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held the 43rd meeting of the Council for the Implementation of Education Rebuilding at the Prime Minister's Office.
At the meeting, a discussion was held on the convening of the Working Group of the Council for the Implementation of Education Rebuilding.
The Prime Minister said in his address,
“The Council for the Implementation of Education Rebuilding has compiled 10 proposals
to date and provided a follow-up report on the status of implementation in May. The Government will continue to steadily implement these proposals.
Japan is currently entering a new era of the 100-year life society as well as ‘Society 5.0,’ a society with advances in technological innovations such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things (IoT). There is a pressing need to develop human resources who will play an active role in multiple fields.
It is necessary, therefore, to review school education tailored to the new era and the capabilities that will be required over a lifetime.
High schools are academic institutions where students can build upon the foundation they acquired in compulsory education and learn skills together with other students that will be necessary to live in society. In this regard, high schools have an extremely important role.
Thus, it is also necessary to review the future of high schools, including the skills they should develop in preparation for the arrival of the new era as well as the role they should fulfill for the realization of regional vitalization amidst Japan’s declining population.
I would like to ask Council members to engage in active discussion regarding these issues and continue to thoroughly follow up on the proposals.”
