The Ceremony of Awarding the MIDORI Prize
April 27, 2018
[Provisional Translation]
On April 27, 2018, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe attended the 12th Ceremony of Awarding the MIDORI Prize held at the Parliamentary Museum, in the presence of Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan.
After delivering his address at the Ceremony, the Prime Minister presented the MIDORI Academic Prize and the Prime Minister's Commendations for Contributors to the National Greening Campaign.
The Prime Minister said in his address,
“In the gracious presence of Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress, and on the occasion of the Ceremony of Awarding the MIDORI Prize here today, I would like to deliver an address on behalf of the Government.
Since the designation of this day as Greenery Day, a national holiday, on May 4, 2007, it has become firmly established among the public as a day for feeling closer to nature, for appreciating its bountiful blessings, and for enriching our spirits.
Today, Japan has become one of the leading ‘forested countries’ of the world, filled with lush greenery. The rich nature that is present in all four seasons has been preserved in areas close to the people, and is a familiar presence in their everyday lives.
This year marks 150 years since the start of the Meiji era (1868-1912). It was during the Meiji era when we began making a national effort to engage in reforestation, through means such as the government’s forest preservation system aimed at protecting greenery, and promoting tree-planting practices. The thriving forests in Japan today are the result of the tireless efforts made by our predecessors.
We must pass on this lush greenery to the future generations. Standing at the milestone of the 150th anniversary of the Meiji era and looking back on this history, I am filled with renewed determination to continue firmly preserving and nurturing this greenery into the future, through the combined efforts of the entire nation.
I hear that this year as well, on Greenery Day and other occasions, there will be events that offer the public the opportunity to experience the beautiful nature of the Imperial Palace at Fukiage Gyoen, allowing citizens to gain a deeper understanding of nature.
I hope that today’s Ceremony, as well as the various initiatives related to greenery, will encourage the people to take renewed interest in greenery, as well as deepen their understanding of nature. In closing, I wish everyone here continued success and good health.”
