On February 13, 2018, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a ceremony to present the People’s Honor Award at the Prime Minister’s Office to Mr. Yoshiharu Habu and Mr. Yuta Iyama, and conferred upon them the certificate of award, the shield, and a commemorative gift.
Mr. Yoshiharu Habu is a top Shogi player and a leading figure in the Shogi world. He has achieved many unparalleled accomplishments, including winning the seven major titles for the first time in 1996, and will always be remembered for the historical feat of being the first in the Shogi world to hold seven lifetime titles.
Mr. Yuta Iyama is a top Go player and a leading figure in the Go world. He has continuously accomplished remarkable achievements. He has achieved the historical feat of being the first in the Go world to hold all seven major titles simultaneously two times, during which time he also completed a calendar-year grand slam.
The People’s Honor Award recognizes Mr. Habu and Mr. Iyama for their remarkable accomplishments that have brought dreams and wonderment to many Japanese people, and given society bright hope and courage.
The People’s Honor Award was established in August 1977 to honor individuals respected by a broad spectrum of the people, and whose distinguished achievements have brought the light of hope to society.
