Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held the 44th meeting of the Nuclear Emergency Response Headquarters at the Prime Minister’s Office.

During the meeting, there was a discussion on the draft basic policy for accelerating Fukushima's reconstruction from the nuclear disaster.

Based on the discussion in the meeting, the Prime Minister said,

“Today we have decided on the basic policy for accelerating Fukushima's reconstruction. This comprises concrete policies developed based on the wishes of the local people and proposals from the ruling parties.

In accordance with this decision, we are advancing preparations to revise the Act on Special Measures for Fukushima Reconstruction and Revitalization at the next regular session of the Diet and incorporate the necessary measures for developing reconstruction hubs in areas to which it is difficult for residents to return and for strengthening the Joint Public and Private Sector Team system.

We will instruct Tokyo Electric Power Company to implement drastic management reforms, and, with their implementation as a basic premise, establish a system to collect part of the expenses broadly from all users and a reserve system to manage funds for decommissioning.

I would like the relevant ministers to work together closely to establish a clear path towards the reconstruction and revitalization of Fukushima as soon as possible.”
