Eastern Economic Forum and Other Events: Second Day
September 3, 2016
[Provisional translation]
On September 3 (local time), Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was visiting Vladivostok in the Russian Federation to attend the second Eastern Economic Forum and other events, held a meeting with people involved with Japanese businesses, and then attended the opening ceremony of the Primorsky Aquarium. Afterwards, he attended the Plenary Session of the Eastern Economic Forum. Lastly, he offered flowers at a memorial monument for Japanese Detainees.
At the opening ceremony of the Primorsky Aquarium, the Prime Minister said,
“President Putin, President Park, ladies and gentlemen, I’d like to offer my heartfelt congratulations on the opening of this national aquarium, the first in Russia. I expect that this will develop into a world-leading aquarium thanks to the strong support of President Putin.
Aquawalls made by Nippura Co., Ltd. and power generators made by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. were used in the construction of this aquarium. I am extremely pleased to know that the technology of Japan has been used here.
As for Japan-Russia relations, we will continue exchanges as we have up until now, including the exchange of dolphins and so on. I have heard that there are dolphins at this aquarium from Japan.
A request has been submitted from this aquarium for Humboldt penguins. I expect that the Japan Association of Zoos and Aquariums will build a cooperative relationship with this aquarium moving forward and that they will give serious consideration to that request.
I would like to close my remarks by expressing my hope that the opening of this aquarium will be an opportunity for the continuing development of cooperation between Japan and Russia in this field.”
