Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held the 10th meeting of the Strategic Headquarters for Space Development at the Prime Minister's Office.
At the meeting, the review conference on space development, progress in discussions at the Committee on the National Space Policy and future space strategy investigation objectives, and other topics were discussed.

Based on the discussion, the Prime Minister said in his address,

“In January this year, we approved the Basic Plan for Space Policy that focuses on three objectives: ensuring space security, promoting the use of space in the private sector, and maintaining and strengthening industrial and scientific technological foundations.

We must not let this plan, which represents a historic shift, end as a mere dream that is never realized. I want to move steadily toward the execution of the plan while at the same time promoting the further enhancement and realization of policies and aiming to revise the work schedule by the end of the year.

When we do so, I would like there to be focused work on the following three points.

First, deliberations should move forward so that bills can be submitted during the next ordinary Diet session in regard to the space activities law and satellite remote sensing law that will serve as systems infrastructure for the promotion of space activities by private Japanese businesses and others.

Second, formulate policies for the realization of autonomous driving, IT agriculture, unmanned freight transport, and other matters ahead of the rest of the world through the fusion of space, big data, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

Third, make use of our space systems, a strength of Japan, and swiftly set up a system that will allow us to promote the strengthening of international cooperation on disaster countermeasures and other topics and the pioneering of a commercial space market with cohesive public-private action.

Centered on Minister Yamaguchi, I would like for the relevant ministers to coordinate on this, and move forward with the execution of the plan and the further enhancement and realization policies.”
