Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held the 29th meeting of the Global Warming Prevention Headquarters at the Prime Minister's Office.

Based on the discussion, the Prime Minister said,

“We have formulated the ambitious goal of the reduction of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 26 percent by 2030, which is on par with other global targets. This is not merely some irresponsible, baseless number, but rather a goal that is supported by specific measures and technologies.

In regard to the energy mix, which forms the foundation of our cumulative efforts, we have specified the goal of the Abe administration, which is to reduce Japan’s degree of reliance on nuclear power as much as possible, while continuing to advance comprehensive energy saving and introducing renewable energy to the maximum extent possible, among other measures. We will realize the three requirements of ‘reducing electricity costs,’ ‘increasing the degree of energy self-sufficiency to above the levels before the Great East Japan Earthquake,’ and ‘reducing GHG emissions on a comparable level to the United States and Europe.’

At the G7 Summit, I will carefully explain Japan’s stance in regard to our ambitious goal for the reduction of GHG emissions. As well as thanking Minister Mochizuki and Minister Miyazawa for thoroughly ensuring that our measures led to results in this way, I would also like to request your greatest efforts so that we can present this goal to the United Nations as soon as possible.

In conjunction with spreading Japan’s excellent energy- and environment-related technology throughout the international community, I am also determined that Japan will become a world leader as we head towards COP21, aiming for the realization of an equitable and effective framework in which all countries participate.

It will be impossible to realize this goal unless not only the Government, but also businesses and the people act together as one. Working as one, the Government will develop a national movement under the banner of ‘Cool Choice.’ I too will stand at the fore of this movement.”
