Message by Prime Minister TAKAICHI Sanae on the Inscription of the Ancient Capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara on the UNESCO World Heritage List

I am truly delighted that the Ancient Capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as Japan's 27th World Heritage property.

Comprising 19 component parts, including the Asuka Palace Site and the Fujiwara Palace Site, the Ancient Capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara are an archaeological ensemble of the capitals of the ancient Japanese state that emerged on the Japanese archipelago between the sixth and eighth centuries and had a profound cultural influence on later generations. Their Outstanding Universal Value has been recognized as a cultural heritage property that vividly illustrates, through the transition between two successive capitals, the process by which a centralized state was established during the formative period of ancient states in East Asia.

I believe this inscription is wonderful news that many people have long awaited. I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations and deepest respect to everyone involved, especially the people of Nara Prefecture and other local communities, who have devoted themselves over many years to protecting and passing on this cultural heritage.

With this inscription, this precious cultural heritage has become not only a treasure of Japan but also a treasure of the world. I have renewed my determination to safeguard it for future generations and ensure that its value is preserved and passed on.

I sincerely hope that many people from Japan and around the world will visit these sites and experience for themselves the value and enduring appeal of the Ancient Capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara.
