Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, attended the Working Lunch on “Ensuring Safe, Rapid, and Efficient AI Adoption” of the G7 Evian Summit, held for approximately 110 minutes commencing at 1:55 p.m. on June 17 (local time. 8:55 p.m. on June 17, Japan time). The overview of the meeting is as follows.
1. Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that AI and digital technology are the cornerstone of one of Japan’s 17 Growth Strategies and an engine for global economic growth, emphasizing the importance of appropriately addressing risks and building a “trustworthy” framework.
2. Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that Japan has led international discussions to build a “safe, secure, and trustworthy AI” ecosystem through the “Hiroshima AI Process”, and to promote “Data Free Flow with Trust (DFFT)” to support it. Prime Minister TAKAICHI also stated that Japan is working with like-minded and the Global South countries to co-create AI ecosystems tailored to the realities of each country and region, through international cooperation based on trust.
3. Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that it is also important to address the potential opportunities as well as the serious risks posed by frontier AI, and that ensuring cybersecurity in critical infrastructure such as finance, telecommunications, and electricity is also important.
4. Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that Japan will strongly promote public and private investment in “trustworthy AI,” focusing on vertical AI as well as physical AI, by utilizing as high-quality data Japan’s strengths such as experience knowledge and “suriawase” technology (an integrated manufacturing approach that adjusts subtle differences among components and processes to achieve high overall quality and performance), accumulated in manufacturing sites. Prime Minister TAKAICHI also stated that Japan will leverage these strengths and work closely with various countries and tech companies with a view to hosting an AI Summit in Japan, aiming to realize “trustworthy AI”.
5. Finally, Prime Minister TAKAICHI emphasized the importance of AI development that takes into account responses to risks in order to protect the safety of children.
6. CEOs from Anthropic, Black Forest Labs, Cohere, Domyn, Google DeepMind, Meta, Mistral, OpenAI, Sakana AI, Salvum AI, Synthesia, and Salesforce also participated in this working lunch.
