On April 21, commencing at 4:30 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit telephone call with H.H. Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, Amir of Qatar.
- At the outset, Prime Minister TAKAICHI expressed her sympathy regarding the human and material damage in Qatar, and expressed her gratitude for Qatar’s generous cooperation regarding the protection of Japanese nationals since the outbreak of the situation.
- In addition, Prime Minister TAKAICHI conveyed Japan’s position that what matters most is that the ceasefire is maintained and that de-escalation of the situation, including ensuring the safety of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, is steadily achieved as soon as possible, and that it is important for the U.S. and Iran to reach a final agreement through talks. Prime Minister TAKAICHI further stated that Japan will continue to work tenaciously, in coordination with the international community including Qatar, to make necessary diplomatic efforts.
- In response, Amir Tamim emphasized the importance of resolving issues through diplomatic means, and stated that Qatar would like to continue cooperating with countries including Japan towards the stabilization of the situation, including the safety of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
- The two leaders confirmed that they will further strengthen bilateral cooperation, including in the energy field, and concurred on continuing close communication.
