Japan-Uzbekistan Summit Meeting (Summary)

On December 20, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, held a Summit Meeting with H.E. Mr. Shavkat MIRZIYOYEV, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, who is paying a visit to Japan to attend the Summit of "Central Asia plus Japan" Dialogue (CA+JAD). After the Summit Meeting, the two leaders signed the “Joint Statement on Expanded Strategic Partnership between Japan and the Republic of Uzbekistan for future generations.” The overview of the meeting is as follows:
1. Introduction
(1) Prime Minister TAKAICHI welcomed the first visit of President Mirziyoyev to Japan in six years. Mentioning that the relations between the two countries have been elevated to the "expanded strategic partnership for the next generation," Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that she hopes to further develop the relationship between the two countries as strategic partners in maintaining and strengthening a free and open international order based on the rule of law.
(2) In response, President Mirziyoyev expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome he received during his visit to Japan and his desire to further strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.

2. Bilateral Relations
(1) Prime Minister TAKAICHI welcomed the preparation of inter-ministerial and other documents in the fields of environment, water resource management, smart cities, transport, tourism, agriculture, higher education, science and innovation, and disaster risk reduction on the occasion of the visit of President Mirziyoyev to Japan. Prime Minister TAKAICHI also stated that Uzbekistan, which is endowed with mineral resources such as uranium, is an important partner for Japan’s economic security, and that she looks forward to strengthening cooperation through the geological surveys being carried out with the support of the Government of Japan.
Furthermore, Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that, as part of support for Uzbekistan's sustainable economic growth, Japan has decided to provide yen loans to promote the livestock sector, grant aid for medical equipment, and private-sector investment finance for improvement of financial access for micro, small and medium enterprises. Prime Minister TAKAICHI also stated Japan’s intention to contribute to enhancement of the global supply chains, including the “Trans-Caspian International Transport Route.”
(2) President Mirziyoyev expressed deep appreciation for Japan’s long-time assistance for the modernization of and human resource development in Uzbekistan and welcomed the active activities of Japanese companies in Uzbekistan and stated that he hopes to further strengthen economic relations through measures such as improving the business environment.
(3) The two leaders concurred on working together to further develop relations between the two countries in a wide range of areas, including political, economic and cultural fields.
3. Reginal and International Situation and Cooperation in the international arena
(1) The two leaders discussed the situation including Central Asia and East Asia such as their policies toward North Korea, including the abductions issue, and concurred that they would continue to cooperate.
(2) The two leaders welcomed the progress of cooperation between the two countries in the international arena and confirmed their intention to further strengthen cooperation in the future. President Mirziyoyev expressed Uzbekistan’s steadfast support for Japan’s permanent membership of the United Nations (UN) Security Council.
