On November 13, 2025, Prime Minister Takaichi held a summit meeting with Hon. Mr. Sitiveni Ligamamada RABUKA, Prime Minister of the Republic of Fiji, at the Prime Minister’s Office.
Following a salute and guard of honor ceremony, the two leaders held a meeting, followed by a signing ceremony and joint press occasion.
The Prime Minister said at the joint press occasion:
“On behalf of the Government and people of Japan, I would like to extend my heartfelt welcome to Prime Minister Rabuka of Fiji for visiting Japan. It is my great pleasure to meet with you for the first time today.
Amid the increasingly severe strategic environment surrounding the Indo-Pacific, strengthening our cooperation with Fiji — a regional leader among the Pacific island countries and a partner with which we share fundamental values and principles — is of paramount importance to the peace and prosperity of both our two countries and the region as a whole.
At our summit meeting just now, we affirmed that our two countries will work together toward the realization of a ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)’ in coordination with the ‘Ocean of Peace’ vision advocated by Prime Minister Rabuka.
We also affirmed that we will continue to work closely together in addressing regional challenges, and agreed to further strengthen our bilateral cooperation across a wide range of areas, including the economy and security.
Since establishing diplomatic relations with Fiji in 1970, Japan has supported sustainable and resilient economic development of Fiji through development cooperation in a variety of areas, such as infrastructure, education, health and medical care, and disaster prevention.
Recent years have seen progress in various cooperative efforts, including Official Security Assistance (OSA) and other security issues, justice, and sports exchanges.
As our bilateral relationship of trust and cooperation continues to develop, Prime Minister Rabuka and I have just signed the ‘Lomavata Kizuna’ Partnership. I am pleased that this will elevate our bilateral relations to greater heights.
Incidentally, ‘Lomavata’ means ‘unity’ in the Fijian language. Guided by this partnership, I will work together with Prime Minister Rabuka to deepen the unity and ‘kizuna’ between our two countries and build a strong and enduring relationship.”
