Japan-Singapore Summit Telephone Meeting (Summary)

On April 14, commencing at 12:30 p.m., for about 25 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, held a telephone talk with H.E. Mr. Lawrence Wong, Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore. The overview of the talks is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister Ishiba expressed that he was pleased to be able to talk with Prime Minister Wong again, following their meeting in Peru last year. In response, Prime Minister Wong stated that he was pleased to be able to hold a meeting with Prime Minister Ishiba again in light of the current global economic situation, and that he would like to continue developing the positive bilateral relationship between Japan and Singapore.

  2. The two leaders discussed a wide range of economic issues, taking into account the impact of U.S. tariff measures and China's retaliatory actions on global economy and the multilateral free trade system. Prime Minister Ishiba stated that the current situation is serious for Japanese companies operating in Southeast Asian countries, including Singapore, and that he attaches importance to close communication with Southeast Asia amid such challenging circumstances.

  3. The two leaders concurred that Japan and Singapore would cooperate closely to promote a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, including the rule of law.
