Telephone Talks between Prime Minister Ishiba and Acting President and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo of the Republic of Korea (Summary)

On December 19, commencing at 9:00 a.m. for approximately 20 minutes, (Japan Time), Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, spoke over the phone with Mr. Han Duck-soo, Acting President and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo of the Republic of Korea (ROK). The summary of the telephone talks is as follows.
  1. Acting President Han explained the recent situation of the ROK, and emphasized that even under Acting President Han, the tone of further developing Japan-ROK relations remains unchanged.

  2. Both leaders concurred that in light of the current strategic environment, the importance of continuing and developing the Japan-ROK relations remains unchanged. Both leaders also confirmed to proceed with preparations for exchange programs and other initiatives for the 60th anniversary of the normalization of the Japan-ROK relations next year, taking into account the importance of these initiatives for the future of the people of both countries and Japan-ROK relations.

  3. The two leaders reaffirmed the importance of the close coordination, including on policies toward North Korea, between Japan and the ROK and among Japan, the ROK and the US that remains ensured even in the face of various complicating situations.
