Japan-Ukraine Summit Telephone Talk (Summary)

On December 25, commencing at around 7:50 p.m., Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit telephone talk with H.E. Mr. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, for approximately 35 minutes. The overview of the talk is as follows.

At the outset, Prime Minister Ishiba expressed his respect for President Zelenskyy who is fighting for his country, and stressed that Japan would never waver in its position of standing with Ukraine.

In addition, Prime Minister Ishiba stated that Japan had been consistent in strongly supporting Ukraine and imposing sanctions against Russia and then explained about Japan’s efforts. Prime Minister Ishiba also expressed his intention to continue to cooperate with Ukraine to realize a just and lasting peace in Ukraine as soon as possible.

President Zelenskyy renewed his deep appreciation for Japan’s support extended thus far, and also explained the current war situation and future efforts among other matters.

The two leaders also exchanged their views on the situation surrounding Ukraine, including the engagement of North Korea’s troops in combat. They concurred that they would continue to work closely together.
