G20 Rio de Janeiro Summit Meeting: Second Day (Summary)

On November 18th and 19th local time (from 18th to 20th JST), the G20 Rio de Janeiro Summit was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, hosted by Brazil as the G20 Presidency. It was chaired by H.E. Mr. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, and Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minster of Japan, attended it. The overview of day 2, November 19, is as follows.

1. Session 3 “Sustainable Development and Energy Transition”
In this session, which started at 10:20 local time (22:20 JST) and lasted approximately 2 hours 30 minutes, G20 leaders discussed climate change and energy transition initiatives to achieve the 1.5 degree Celsius target, responses to environmental issues such as plastic waste, and sustainable development.
 The G20 members, while recognizing the leading role the G20 should play based on the fact that G20 accounts for 80% of the global emission of the greenhouse gas, shared the importance of the commitment to strengthen the efforts towards climate change and energy transitions.

2. Closing Session
In the closing session, which lasted approximately 30 minutes from 12:50 local time (00:50 20th JST), Brazilian President Lula summed up the Summit. In addition, President Ramaphosa of South Africa, the next presidency of the G20, announced that the G20 Summit, in the African continent for the first time, will be held in South Africa, next year.
