Japan-ROK Summit Meeting (Summary)

On October 10, commencing at 3:45 p.m. (local time. 5:45 p.m. on October 10, Japan time) for approximately 40 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan held a Summit Meeting with H.E. Mr. YOON Suk Yeol, President of the Republic of Korea (ROK) during his visit to Vientiane, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, for the ASEAN-related Summit Meetings. The summary of the bilateral meeting is as follows.
  1. Both leaders exchanged views on ways to strengthen cooperation in various areas, including the promotion of people-to-people exchange, coordination in fields of economy, and cooperation in fields of security, looking ahead to the next year, which marks the 60th anniversary of the normalization of the Japan-ROK relations. They also had frank discussions on the roles Japan and the ROK must fulfill as partners in the international community. Both leaders concurred on accelerating talks between the two nations to further elevate the bilateral relationship to new heights towards the next year, which marks the 60th anniversary of the normalization of the Japan- ROK relations. Both leaders also confirmed that they would further strengthen cooperation among Japan, the ROK, and the United States in fields of security.

  2. Both leaders exchanged views on regional situations, such as our policies toward North Korea. Regarding North Korea, they shared serious concern on its nuclear and missile activities and the advancement of its military cooperation with Russia. Both leaders reaffirmed that they would continue to work closely together between Japan and the ROK, as well as among Japan, the ROK, and the United States. President Yoon reiterated the support to Japan regarding the abductions issue.

  3. Both leaders welcomed that they got to exchange their views in person shortly after Prime Minister Ishiba’s assumption in office, and reaffirmed that they would continue to communicate closely with one another.
