Letter of Condolence by Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio on the Passing of the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, Former Prime Minister of Canada

Following the passing of the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, Former Prime Minister of Canada on March 1 (local time, February 29), Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio sent the following message of condolences to the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada. 

“I would like to extend my deepest condolences on behalf of the Government and the people of Japan, upon hearing of the passing of the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, former Prime Minister of Canada. 

During his term of office, Prime Minister Mulroney contributed to deepening the relations between Japan and Canada in a variety of areas. In particular, Prime Minister Mulroney was deeply saddened by the human rights violations suffered by innocent Japanese Canadians during the Second World War, and after becoming Prime Minister, he gained Redress for Japanese Canadians. Redress has contributed greatly to the restoration of the honour and subsequent improvement of the social status of Japanese Canadians and to the promotion of friendly relations between Japan and Canada. In addition to this courageous and historic agreement, Prime Minister Mulroney also launched a series of future-oriented initiatives to strengthen bilateral relations, including the conclusion of the Japan-Canada Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement and the Working Holiday Agreement. 

On behalf of the Government of Japan, I would like to express my sincere respect and condolences to former Prime Minister Mulroney for his contribution to the development of Japan and Canada relations.”
