We cannot help but be deeply saddened to learn of the passing of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). On behalf of the Government of Japan and the Japanese people, I extend our deepest condolences to the Government and people of the UAE.
Since his inauguration in 2004, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan fulfilled an important role in the economic and social development of the UAE, and in realizing the peace and stability of the Middle East region. Further, following his visit to Japan as Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi on the occasion of the Expo 1970 Osaka, he exerted extraordinary leadership in strengthening the relationship between Japan and the UAE, especially in the area of energy.
The passing of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who has gathered deep respect from countries around the world, is not only a great loss for the UAE people, but also for the international community. Japan will always stand with the UAE, while the people of the UAE overcome this great sadness.
