Press Conference by the Prime Minister on North Korea’s Suspected Launch of Ballistic Missile

January 5, 2022
[Provisional Translation]

A short while ago, North Korea fired a projectile presumed to be a ballistic missile. In response to the incident, I have given three instructions: firstly, to dedicate maximum effort to gather and analyze relevant intelligence with a view to providing the public with speedy and accurate information; secondly, to ensure the safety of vessels, aircraft and other assets; and thirdly and lastly, to take all possible measures to prepare for contingencies.

The successive launches of missiles by North Korea since last year is extremely regrettable. The Government is committed to further strengthening its vigilance and monitoring, while urgently analyzing the details of the matter.

(Regarding possible damage inflicted on vessels and other assets and the location where the projectile landed)

What you have pointed out are currently under analysis. I hope to confirm the results of the analysis as soon as possible.

(Regarding the number of launched projectiles)

That is also under analysis. We will inform you after it is confirmed.
