Japan-Ukraine Summit Meeting (Summary)
On September 23 at 14:00 local time (at 3:00 JST on September 24) for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan during his visit to the United States to attend the United Nations General Assembly, held a Summit Meeting with H.E. Mr. Volodymyr ZELENSKYY, President of Ukraine. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
At the outset, President Zelenskyy conferred the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise I degree of Ukraine on Prime Minister Kishida in recognition of Prime Minister’s achievements in strengthening bilateral cooperation and supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

At the outset, President Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude for support for Ukraine by Prime Minister’s strong leadership, strengthening of bilateral relations by visit to Kyiv of Prime Minister Kishida, participation of President Zelenskyy in the Hiroshima summit. Prime Minister Kishida stated that two and a half years ago, when the Russian aggression began, he decided to firmly stand up against the outrage that shook the foundation of the international order with a strong sense of crisis that “Ukraine today may be East Asia tomorrow”, and Japan would continue to do utmost to support Ukraine.

Prime Minister Kishida explained that the outcome of the Japan-Ukraine Conference for Promotion of Economic Growth and Reconstruction held in February this year has been steadily followed up and also stated that the JETRO Kyiv Office is scheduled to be opened in coming October. Prime Minister Kishida also welcomed the fact that the two governments recently reached an agreement in principle on the Japan-Ukraine Agreement on the Security of Information.

President Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude for the contribution of Prime Minister Kishida, who, last year, led the G7 discussion on strict sanctions against Russia and on strong support for Ukraine as G7 chair, as well as for the various assistance provided by Japan including in the field of recovery and reconstruction. The President also briefed the Prime Minister on the current situation in Ukraine and the various related efforts by Ukraine.

The two leaders confirmed that both countries would continuously work closely.
