Prime Minister Kishida’s meeting with H.E. Mr. António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations (Summary)

On September 22, commencing at 18:30 p.m. (local time) for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, who is visiting New York, U.S. to attend the United Nations General Assembly, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations. The overview of the meeting is as follows:
1. Prime Minister Kishida stated the following:
(1) I had the pleasure of closely working with Secretary-General Guterres, particularly on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. We cannot stop our efforts towards a world without nuclear weapons, and the Friends of FMCT will be launched tomorrow.
(2) Today, at the Summit of the Future, I called for the realisation of a future of peace, freedom and prosperity based on human dignity and human security. I also called on the international community for sharing responsibility and reaffirming their commitment to multilateralism.
(3) On Security Council reform, a significant number of states support the expansion of both permanent and non-permanent membership, and it is important to achieve concrete results.
(4) I would appreciate continued attention to increasing the number of Japanese staffs.
2. In response, Secretary-General Guterres thanked Prime Minister Kishida and the Government of Japan for their cooperation with the UN and explained about the outcome of the Summit of the Future. The two leaders concurred on the importance of multilateralism with the UN at its core.
