Japan-Australia Summit Meeting (Summary)
On September 21, commencing at 1:25p.m. local time (2:25 a.m. on September 22, JST) for approximately 35 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, who is visiting Wilmington, the United States, to attend the Japan-Australia-India-U.S. (Quad) Leaders’ Meeting, held a Japan-Australia Summit Meeting with the Hon. Anthony Albanese, MP, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Australia. The overview of the meeting is as follows:
At the outset, Prime Minister Kishida expressed his desire to continue maintaining and strengthening the ‘Special Strategic Partnership’ between Japan and Australia, which has been elevated to a new level under Prime Minister Albanese’s leadership. In response, Prime Minister Albanese expressed his respect for the leadership of Prime Minister Kishida, in driving cooperation between Japan and Australia.
The two leaders had a candid exchange of views on bilateral cooperation, including security cooperation, as well as on regional and international affairs, and reaffirmed the broadly aligned strategic recognition between Japan and Australia.
The two leaders confirmed to strengthen cooperation on the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and in the field of economic security. Also, with regard to ALPS treated water, Prime Minister Kishida explained that Japan and China recently shared recognition as an important step forward for repeal its bans on import of Japanese aquatic products. In response, Prime Minister Albanese shared positive response.
Also, the two leaders had a candid exchange of views on expanding people to people exchange between the two countries and concurred the importance of exchanges between the younger generations in particular.
In addition, Prime Minister Kishida welcomed Australia's participation in the Friends of Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty, and the two leaders confirmed that they would continue to work closely together to realize a world without nuclear weapons.
