Prime Minister Kishida’s Telephone Meeting with IAEA Director General Grossi (Summary)
On September 20, commencing at 3:00 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio held a telephone meeting with H.E. Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The overview is as follows.
Prime Minister Kishida expressed his gratitude to Director General Grossi for his commitment to engaging with the discharge of the ALPS treated water into the sea, and stated that he welcomed that Japan and the IAEA had concurred in conducting the additional measures on the existing monitoring under the IAEA framework based on Japan's proposal.
In addition, Prime Minister Kishida stated that Japan would work with the IAEA to ensure that the water is released safely until the “last drop” and would explain its efforts to the international community with a high level of transparency.
Director General Grossi confirmed that the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea has been carried out safely and as planned so far, in line with international safety standards and stated that the IAEA will work with Japan to undertake the early implementation of the additional monitoring measures under its framework.
The two sides agreed to continue to work closely together in various fields including the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea.
