Japan-Viet Nam Summit Video Teleconference Meeting (Summary)

On September 3, commencing at 5:45 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit video teleconference meeting with H.E. Mr. To LAM, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam. The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister Kishida offered his congratulations to General Secretary To Lam on his appointment as General Secretary of the Communist Party, and stated that he is confident that General Secretary To Lam’s appointment will further deepen relations between the two countries. He also stated that he hopes to further develop the relationship between the two countries, which was elevated to a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia and the World” on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Viet Nam last year. General Secretary To Lam expressed his gratitude for Prime Minister Kishida’s contributions to the development of relations between the two countries, and stated that as General Secretary of the Party, he will work to further strengthen Japan-Viet Nam relations.

  2. The two leaders agreed to promote people-to-people exchanges and strengthen economic relations. With regard to the economy, they agreed to revitalize ODA cooperation, cooperate with each other to improve the business environment, and advance cooperation in new areas such as DX (Digital Transformation), GX (Green Transformation), and highly skilled human resource development. They also agreed to closely cooperate in the field of security.

  3. The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and international situations. Prime Minister Kishida stated that he would like to continue to cooperate with Viet Nam, an important partner that plays a key role in realizing a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific”, in the regional and international arenas. The two leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation towards peace and stability in the region and the international community.
