On August 30th, commencing at 2:10 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, received a courtesy call by the delegation led by Senator William Hagerty, United States Senate. The overview is as follows:

At the outset, Prime Minister Kishida welcomed the delegation on their visit to Japan. He also expressed his gratitude for the continued support of the U.S. Congress for the Japan-U.S. relationship.

Prime Minister Kishida reiterated that the importance of the Japan-U.S. relationship as global partners remains unwavering and he intends to continue working to ensure and strengthen peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and the international society. The attending Senators agreed with this point.

Both sides exchanged views on regional issues, including China and responses to North Korea, including the abductions issue, as well as common challenges for Japan and the U.S. such as economic security. They also reaffirmed the importance of strengthening cooperation between Japan and the U.S., as well as the network of like-minded countries centered around Japan and the U.S.

The attending Senators expressed their high appreciation for Prime Minister Kishida's leadership in strengthening the Japan-U.S. Alliance and in promoting a “Free and Open Indo-pacific,” and conveyed their expectations for the further development of Japan-U.S. relations.
