Japan – Nauru Summit Meeting (Summary)

On July 18, commencing at 4:35pm for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a Japan-Nauru Summit Meeting with H.E. David Adeang, President of the Republic of Nauru, who is visiting Japan to participate in the 10th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM10). The overview of the meeting is as follows:
- Prime Minister Kishida stated that PALM 10, with the cooperation of President Adeang, had provided an opportunity to further strengthen the “kizuna” between Japan and the Pacific Island countries, to discuss cooperation aligned with the “2050 Strategy for Blue Pacific Continent,” and to make the meeting an opportunity to communicate domestically as well as internationally the direction that Japan and the Pacific Island countries are taking together. He expressed his gratitude for President Adeang’s cooperation.
- Prime Minister Kishida conveyed the decision to provide a patrol vessel to improve Nauru’s capacity of controlling illegal fishing. With regards to Nauru’s Island Ring Road, which was constructed by a Japanese Company in the past, he mentioned that Japan already conducted survey undertaken by experts. President Adeang expressed congratulations to the success of PALM 10, and his gratitude to the Government and people of Japan for Japan’s cooperation and stated that he looked forward to enhanced cooperation between the two countries.
- Regarding the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea, Prime Minister Kishida explained that Japan would continue its efforts to ensure safety, and President Adeang expressed once again his warm welcome.
- Both leaders also exchanged candid views on various regional issues.
