Japan – Tuvalu Summit Meeting (Summary)

On July 16, commencing at 4:05pm for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a Japan-Tuvalu Summit Meeting with Hon. Feleti Penitala Teo, Prime Minister of Tuvalu, who is visiting Japan to participate in the 10th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM10). The overview of the meeting is as follows:
- Prime Minister Kishida stated that at PALM 10, with the cooperation of Prime Minister Teo, he wishes to further strengthen the “kizuna” between Japan and the Pacific Island countries, to discuss cooperation aligned with the “2050 Strategy for Blue Pacific Continent,” and to make the meeting an opportunity to communicate domestically as well as internationally the direction that Japan and the Pacific Island countries are taking together.
- Prime Minister Kishida stated that Japan would support Tuvalu in submarine cable related project, and decided to provide equipment to strengthen cyber security capacity of Tuvalu. He also stated that with the project of Asia Development Bank (ADB) a new vessel was under construction in Japan, and he expressed his expectation that it would contribute to improvement of transport services in Tuvalu. Prime Minister Kishida extended his respect to the Tuvalu’s appeal on the danger of climate change to moved international society, and conveyed Japan’s efforts to counter climate change to be introduced at PALM10. Prime Minister Teo expressed his hope for successful PALM 10, and conveyed his gratitude to the Government and people of Japan for Japan’s cooperation, and stated that he looked forward to enhanced cooperation between the two countries.
- Regarding the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea, Prime Minister Kishida explained that Japan would continue its efforts to ensure safety, and Prime Minister Teo expressed once again his warm welcome.
- Both leaders also exchanged candid views on various regional issues.
