Japan- Netherlands Summit Meeting (Summary)

On July 11, commencing at 12:30 p.m. (local time; 1:30 a.m., July 12, JST) , for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, who is visiting the U.S. to attend the NATO Summit, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Dick Schoof, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The overview is as follows.

  1. Prime Minister Kishida congratulated Prime Minister Schoof on his appointment, and stating that the Netherlands is a strategic partner sharing values and principles, he expressed his desire to collaborate with Prime Minister Schoof in the lead-up to the 425th anniversary of exchanges next year. In response, Prime Minister Schoof expressed his gratitude, and referring to a long history of exchanges with Japan, he expressed his intention to continue working with Japan in all areas, including security.
  2. Prime Minister Kishida welcomed the concrete engagement of the Netherlands in the Indo-Pacific region, including sending its frigate HNLMS TROMP to Japan last month.
  3. The two leaders also discussed regional affairs, such as the situation in Ukraine and the situation in East Asia including response to North Korea, and confirmed that the two countries will coordinate on various global issues.
  4. In addition, Prime Minister Kishida offered his congratulations on former Prime Minister Rutte’s appointment as the next Secretary General of NATO, to which Prime Minister Schoof expressed his gratitude. The two leaders concurred to enhance their cooperation also in the Japan-NATO context, taking into account that the Netherlands will host the NATO Summit next year.
