Japan-Finland Summit Meeting (Summary)

On July 11, commencing at 1:15 p.m. (local time; 2:15 a.m., July 12, JST), for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, who is visiting the U.S. to attend the NATO Summit, held a meeting with H.E. Dr. Alexander Stubb, President of the Republic of Finland. The overview is as follows.

  1. Prime Minister Kishida stated that Japan and Finland are strategic partners that share values and principles, and the current difficult international situation has further strengthened the ties between the two countries. He also stated that Finland’s accession to NATO has expanded the opportunities for bilateral cooperation through NATO and the U.S. In addition, Prime Minister Kishida expressed his intention to further deepen cooperation and collaboration between Japan and Finland in responding to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and maintaining and strengthening the free and open international order based on the rule of law. President Stubb expressed his desire to continue working with Japan in all areas, including security and the economy.
  2. The two leaders concurred to expand cooperation in the area of security, including defense equipment and technology and civil protection, and to further enhance cooperation in the field of advanced science and technology including 5G/6G and supercomputing, where both countries possess strengths.
  3. The two leaders confirmed that the security of the Euro-Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific are becoming increasingly inseparable, and exchanged views also on response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the situation in East Asia including response to North Korea, and the importance of reaching out to the Global South, and concurred to work closely together.
