Japan-Sweden Summit Meeting (Summary)

On July 10, commencing at 6:40 p.m. (local time; 7:40 a.m., July 11, JST) , for approximately 20 minutes , Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, who is visiting the U.S. to attend the NATO Summit, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Ulf Kristersson, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Sweden. The overview is as follows.

  1. Prime Minister Kishida expressed his pleasure to meet Prime Minister Kristersson again at the historic NATO Summit, which Sweden is attending for the first time as a member, and stated that Sweden’s accession to NATO has expanded the opportunities for Japan-Sweden cooperation through NATO and the U.S. Prime Minister Kishida also expressed his intention to further deepen cooperation and collaboration between Japan and Sweden for responding to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and maintaining and strengthening a free and open international order based on the rule of law. Prime Minister Kristersson expressed his desire to continue working with Japan in all areas, including security.
  2. The two leaders confirmed that both countries possess advanced technological capabilities and that cooperation between companies has progressed in the fields of green transformation (GX), hydrogen, digital, and life sciences. The two leaders concurred to further enhance bilateral cooperation in the areas of not only politics and security, but also economy, science and technology, and academic collaboration.
  3. Prime Minister Kristersson highly praised Japan ’s assistance to Ukraine The two leaders confirmed that the security of the Euro Atlantic and Indo Pacific are becoming ever more inseparable , and exchanged views also on the response to Russia’s aggression ag ainst Ukraine and the situation in East Asia including the response to North Korea, and concurred to work closely together.
