Japan-UK Summit Telephone Talk (Summary)

On July 6, commencing at 4:10 p.m. for approximately 10 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit telephone talk with the Rt Hon Keir Starmer MP, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The overview of the talk is as follows.
- Prime Minister Kishida congratulated Prime Minister Starmer on the assumption of his office, and stated that the partnership between Japan and the UK, sharing values and principles, has never been closer and more robust, and conveyed his intention to closely collaborate with Prime Minister Starmer to further reinforce the bilateral relations and to maintain and strengthen the free and open international order based on the rule of law. Furthermore, Prime Minister Kishida expressed his gratitude for the heartwarming welcome of the UK on the occasion of the visit to the United Kingdom by Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress. Prime Minister Starmer replied that it was an honour to be given the opportunity to exchange greetings with Their Majesties and that he intended to work with Prime Minister Kishida to bring Japan-UK relationship even closer.
- The two leaders concurred that the security of the Euro-Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific is inseparable and affirmed their close collaboration. The two leaders also affirmed to continue to promote cooperation between the two countries including the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP).
- In addition to their cooperation within the G7, the two leaders exchanged views on regional affairs including the situations in Ukraine, in the Middle East, and in East Asia, as well as on various global issues, and affirmed their collaboration.
