Japan-Ukraine Summit Meeting (Summary)

On June 13, commencing at 4:55 p.m. local time (at 11:55 p.m. JST) for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan during his visit to Italy to attend G7 Apulia Summit, held a Summit Meeting with H.E. Mr. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

At the outset of the meeting, the two leaders signed the bilateral document with Ukraine titled “Accord on Support for Ukraine and Cooperation between the Government of Japan and Ukraine” based on the “Joint Declaration of Support for Ukraine” announced on the occasion of NATO summit last year.

1. Prime Minister Kishida stated that the signing the bilateral document with Japan would highlight the fact that the issue of Ukraine is not only an European issue, but also the one for the entire international community.

2. Prime Minister Kishida stated that Japan has been assisting Ukraine facing difficulties and would make a firm commitment to the new initiatives, including (1) financial assistance to ensure immediate financial needs, (2) additional assistance in the electricity sector to ensure impending demand of electric power, and (3) assistance in the area of mine action, such as large Japanese-made mine-clearing machines. Prime Minister Kishida also informed President Zelenskyy of Japan's intention to host an international conference on Ukraine mine action year.

3. Prime Minister Kishida stated that Japan would strengthen its support for the recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine. The Prime Minister also stated that 23 documents were signed at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Berlin held this week, and that Japan would continue to promote joint public-private initiatives, including support for pilot technology demonstration through United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

4. In response, President Zelenskyy welcomed the signing of the bilateral document and expressed his deep appreciation for continued support by Japan as well as assistance in financial, electricity and mine action sectors that Prime Minister Kishida mentioned. President Zelenskyy also stated that Ukraine will cooperate as far as they can in organizing the international conference on Ukraine mine action in Japan which will be held next year.

5. Prime Minister Kishida mentioned his expectations for the success of the “Summit on Peace in Ukraine” to be held in Switzerland on June 15-16. President Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude for Prime Minister Kishida's attendance and contribution to the Summit.
