Japan-Brazil Summit Telephone Talk (Summary)

On January 10, commencing at 8:00 p.m. for approximately 30minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit telephone talk with H.E. Mr. Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, President of the Federative Republic of Brazil. The summary of the talk is as follows.
- At the outset, Prime Minister Kishida stated that Japan and Brazil are the Strategic and Global Partners that share fundamental values and Japan would like to work closely together with Brazil to uphold and strengthen the free and open international order based on the rule of law and to ensure the world where human dignity is secured. He also expressed his gratitude for the message of condolence from Brazil over the damage caused by the recent 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake.
- Regarding the G20 that Brazil chairs this year, Prime Minister Kishida stated that Japan is willing to enhance cooperation with Brazil and work closely together for the success of the G20 Rio de Janeiro Summit on the basis of the outcome achieved under Japan’s Presidency of the G7. President Lula explained priority issues at the G20 Brazil and expressed his expectation for cooperation with Japan.
- The two leaders committed to work together in the areas of environment and climate change and in efforts to eradicate poverty and hunger. The two leaders also committed to discuss various ways to strengthen economic relations, including further trade and investment promotion.
- The two leaders exchanged views on cooperation in the international arena. The two leaders further shared a view that they will work closely together on UN Security Council reform as members of the G4.
